Information and communication technology
New automation, ICT and GIS technologies provide solutions for steering and
controlling mobile working units in site-specific production systems as a way to
fulfil requirements for a safe, efficient, environment friendly and traceable
production. However, enhanced quality and efficient performance of work tasks
require the organizing of a user-centric on-line support which is based on open
system solutions. A missing link in the envisioned system is the lack of a
refined and integrated analysis of the acquired data and the transformation of
these data into information and knowledge useful for decision making. Currently,
major parts of the information collected by sensors or by manual registrations
are not used, due to data logistic problems. Costs of the time spent for
handling and managing the data, in many cases, outweigh the economical benefits
using the data. Thus, for example, the use of wireless communication is very
much in the demand in the future.
The required user-friendly system does not exist currently, and developing these kinds of open systems will be challenging for the companies alone.
